One autumn night after leaving a party, Ichabod has an ill-fated encounter with the Headless Horseman in which he is chased, attacked, and never heard from again. The investigation into his disappearance turned up Ichabodâs saddle-less horse and near a deep brook his hat beside a shattered pumpkin. The tale has inspired countless artistic interpretations featuring the iconic Headless Horseman and pumpkin.
