Hansel and Gretel is one of the most beloved fairytales recorded by the Brothers Grimm. Set deep within a German forest, the tale is straight from the nightmares of children. First, the siblings Hansel and Gretel are abandoned by their parents due to food scarcity. Then as they wander lost within the deep dark woods, they come across a mysterious cottage made of cake and sweets only to discover the candy was placed there to lure children into the grasp of a horrific cannibalistic witch. Inevitably, the children outsmart the witch and burn her alive in the very oven she intended to cook them in. Hansel and Gretel ransack her cottage and find their way home with pockets full of jewels. This fairytale is especially popular around Christmastime due to how reminiscent the witch’s confectionery cottage is to decorated gingerbread houses.
